  • Duration: 6–7 hours
  • Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult (Seven Hills)
  • Highest point: 2,639 m
  • Elevation gain: +1,639 m

Your Mount Rinjani adventure begins early in the morning at Rinjani Volcano Escape Guest House in Senaru Village (601 m), when the mountain air is still cool and the village is just waking up.

06:00 AM – Wake up and prepare for the journey. After a refreshing morning routine, you will enjoy breakfast at the guest house while your guide and porters carefully organize camping equipment, food supplies, and logistics for the trek.

07:00 AM – Depart from Senaru to Sembalun Village (1,156 m). The scenic drive takes around 30–40 minutes, passing rice fields, traditional villages, and wide open landscapes with Mount Rinjani slowly revealing itself in the distance.

Upon arrival in Sembalun, your guide completes registration at the Rinjani Information Center and gives a safety briefing, explaining the route, pacing, and rest points for the day.

08:30 AM – The trek begins. The trail starts gently across Sembalun’s vast savannah, where the open landscape and wide skies create a sense of scale and anticipation. The terrain is mostly flat at first, but the sun can be strong, so sun protection is important.

10:00 AM – Arrive at Pos 1 (1,300 m)

A short rest allows you to hydrate and adjust your pace. From here, the rural scenery is peaceful, with farmers and grazing buffaloes often visible in the distance.

10:10 AM – Continue to Pos 2 (1,500 m). The trail gradually becomes steeper, rolling gently uphill through grassy hills and open terrain.

11:00 AM – Arrive at Pos 2 (1,500 m)

A longer break is taken here. Snacks and drinks are served while you enjoy a wider view of the Sembalun Valley stretching far below.

11:15 AM – Continue trekking to Pos 3 (1,800 m). This section takes around one hour, with steady uphill walking through low bushes and volcanic soil.

12:30 PM – Arrive at Pos 3 (1,800 m)

Lunch is prepared by the porters, offering a well-earned rest. This longer break (1.5–2 hours) is important to restore energy before the most demanding part of the day.

After lunch, the ascent toward Plawangan Sembalun begins through a series of steep hills known locally as Tujuh Bukit (The Seven Hills). Each hill feels harder than the last, both physically and mentally.

The final and most challenging section is Bukit Penyesalan, the “Hill of Regret,” where many trekkers question every step — until the trail finally opens to the crater rim.

As you climb higher, the temperature cools and the scenery becomes more dramatic. Golden savannahs stretch endlessly below, while the summit ridge rises above.

3:30–4:00 PM – Arrive at Plawangan Sembalun Crater Rim (2,639 m)

Reaching the crater rim is a moment of relief and awe. From here, Segara Anak Lake and Mount Baru Jari lie far below inside the vast caldera.

Your porters set up camp while you enjoy hot tea or coffee, watching the afternoon light slowly fade into a spectacular sunset.

Dinner is served as the temperature drops to around 8–10°C. Warm clothing is essential. Rest early in preparation for the summit climb before dawn.
